Find out what’s happening with the honey bees and all your favorite six-legged critters at 15th Annual The Great Insect Fair, being held on Oct. 4. Sponsored by the College of Agricultural Sciences' entomology department, the fair takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Snider Agricultural Arena, at the corner of Park Avenue and Fox Hollow Road (across from Beaver Stadium) on the University Park campus.

This year the fair’s theme, “To Bee or Not to Bee?”, focuses on honey bees, including the role they play in the food chain and the challenges they face. “Honey bee colonies continue to die the across the country from a syndrome called Colony Collapse Disorder,” says Steve Jacobs, senior extension associate in entomology and fair coordinator. “Penn State is taking the lead role in finding a solution to the decline of the nation's honey bees and other pollinators, which are critical to the production of $15 billion worth of crops in the United States.”

In keeping with the theme, this year’s fair will feature bee observation hives, displays and information about Colony Collapse Disorder, and fun games and activities such as Nectar Collector, Haulin’ Pollen and making beeswax candles. In addition, dancing bees will be projected on a giant screen inside the arena throughout the day.

Organizers say other fun and interactive events are being planned to appeal to people of all ages:
• Build-A-Bug Competition - -- Bring your homemade insect for judging and a chance to win prizes (for rules and guidelines, visit the Web at http://entscied.cas.psu.edu/BAB.html).
• Insect Olympics
• Cockroach Races
• Putt Putt Golf
• Butterfly Tent-Interact with live butterflies!
• Insect Petting Zoo -- See and touch many fascinating, live insects from around the world.
• Insect Deli -- Featuring infamous "Chocolate Chirpies" (Honey & chocolate-covered crickets).
• Live Musical Entertainment
• Children's Games and Activities
• Insect Vendors -- Shop for insect pets and insect arts, crafts, books and t-shirts.
• The BugMobile! -- Learn about insects and integrated pest management while chatting with the one and only talking car.

Admission to the Great Insect Fair is free, although donations will be accepted to help defray costs. Free parking is available at the Snider Agricultural Arena and across Park Avenue behind the Centre County/Penn State Visitor Center. For more information, call the entomology department at 814-865-1895 or visit the Web at http://www.ento.psu.edu/Scied/Fair.html. The 5th Annual Polar Bear Ride & Plunge
In Memory of Bennett Sterling
To benefit the Blue Butterfly Fund
January 1, 2008

The Rides:
The Long Course New this YEAR!
The first ride will depart from the First Lutheran Church, Mifflinburg, PA parking lot at 11:00am. We will take the back roads out towards Weikert and north of Mifflinburg before making the ascent to Halfway-Dam. There will be a lead and follow vehicle but no other support until you get to Halfway-Dam (so be prepared if you accept this challenge!). After the ascent and the plunge, you take the same route as the 2nd ride back to Mifflinburg. The ride will be ~50 miles. Check the website for a more accurate estimate.

The Traditional Course
The second ride departs the First Lutheran Church parking lot at 11:10am. We take back roads to Route 192 and head up the mountain to R.B. Winter State Park. The return route is the same (but colder). The roundtrip distance is 25 miles.

To Plunge or not to Plunge: Plunge! Why should you do this? To fully wake up to the New Year and remind yourself that you are alive!!! The choice is yours, but we highly recommend you take the Plunge on New Years Day! There will be an area to de-robe and to change back into warmer clothes, hot cider, and a lot of people to witness your bravery.

Registration: Registration opens at 9:30am in the basement of the First Lutheran Church in Mifflinburg, PA.

Challenge: Set your price. How much money would it take to get you to jump in the dam on January 1st? Challenge your family and friends to donate money to meet your goal and realize that your effort will help families whose children have cancer. Their donations are tax-deductible and sure to make you suffer for a good cause. Are you up for the challenge?

Donations: A minimum donation of $20 is required to participate in the benefit ride/plunge. If we receive your registration with $50 or more in pledged donations by December 24th, you will receive our very first Polar Bear Ride and Plunge event T-shirt FREE. These will be available on a very limited basis, so be sure to register by December 20th. This also entitles your sponsors to a tax-deduction for 2007!

Post Ride Party: Ahh…the best part of the Polar Bear Ride and Plunge is the Post Ride Party! Stay after the ride and join us for the post ride party in the basement of First Lutheran Church. Warm up with some hot soup, yummy treats, and camaraderie. We will have door prizes for participants and an award for the top fund-raiser.

Safety: There will be a lead vehicle and a follow vehicle warning traffic of our presence on the road. The group tends to get stretched out due to the climb up to the dam, and the roads are open to traffic. Each rider will be asked to sign a waiver and must assume responsibility for their own safety. This is not a race but it is a great opportunity to get together with others, have fun, and benefit a great cause. In the event of poor weather or road conditions the longer ride may be cancelled and/or the event will be postponed until Saturday, January 5th. Check the website on January 1st to confirm that we are a GO!

For more information go to http://www.bluebutterflyfund.org/events.html or call 570.922.1608
All proceeds benefit the Blue Butterfly Fund, a 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to helping families whose children have cancer.
