Go to the dogs!

Here's a not so novel idea....and it can be implemented at a single borough council meeting at no cost. Allow dogs to use the Tyrone Borough controlled park land. Although we do not live in Tyrone we are "Tyroners" who educated our three children in Tyrone schools, owned a business on 10th...

Sam Winters

Sam Winters , a life long fly fisher and founding member of the Little Juniata River Association has died of cancer at the age of 75. Sam was a quiet, humble man who always thought about the impact of his words and always looked for the good in all. When it was time to carry fingerling trout in a b...

Re: Sewage Treatment Plant mandate

Banksy, That's exactly what it was for over 100 years. first the Pulp mill came in the late 1800's dumping its colorful chemicals and then the town grew with no waste treatment until 1953 when the first treatment plant was completed. I was told by an oldtimer who grew up in Birmingham that before th...

Re: Sewage Treatment Plant mandate

Agreed. However, my point above is that the Little Juniata River is important enough, on its own, to pay the price for meeting reduced nutrient levels mandated by the Chesapeake Bay 4 state agreement and the EPA. As one who lived by the bay and who boated, fished and duck hunted on every mile of it,...

Re: Sewage Treatment Plant mandate

Are we missing the point? Concern about the water quality in the bay is real and justified. However, bay or no bay we should be reducing nutrients (read as pollution) in the Little Juniata River for the benefit of the local people and the Tyrone economy. A healthier river will bring added economic b...

Re: Flooding in Tyrone

Flooding solutions We were newcomers to the Tyrone area in 1978, when the Tyrone residents voted to defeat the referendum authorizing the completion of the Flood Control Plan. Now we know (thanks to Chris Yanello’s Daily Herald article), that it was designed by the Corp of Engineers as a response t...

Re: Sewage Treatment Plant mandate

As Sandman correctly points out, we here in Blair County are not dealing with population growth. The population actually peaked some years ago and has fallen since. Our storm water control issues are due to the willingness to allow construction of malls and highways without regard for downstream aff...

Re: Sewage Treatment Plant mandate

Luke, You may be surprised to learn that I agree with you regarding the fines levied. All that the LJRA wants is a clean river. The fine payable by Tyrone Borough to DEP for violation of the clean water act was prescribed by law. The damages paid to the Pa Fish and Boat Commision was for the loss of...

Re: Sewage Treatment Plant mandate

Luke, The vast majority of rural citizens including those in the Little Juniata River watershed, which includes the Spruce Creek valley, have DEP approved, on- site septic systems that are periodically pumped by authorized operators and drain fields that work just fine. Unfortunately there are some ...

Re: Sewage Treatment Plant mandate

Since some of you have asked. here is the latest on the fish kill last February. I have been assured by both PFBC and DEP officials that fines will eventually be levied against the Tyrone Water Treatment facility for allowing an excessive release of Ammonia last February which resulted in a substant...

Re: Sewage Treatment Plant mandate

Why should we care about the "Salmonids" (trout) that Sandstone refers to? I have read all the conversation since this topic was posted. My wife Carol and I have lived in Blair Co., TyroneTownship for over 30 years and I have fished the Little Juniata River for 40 years (10 years as a fre...

Re: Sewage Treatment Plant mandate

Skippy, Bucktail et al, The statement that Tyrone Borough sold capacity to Northern Blair Sewer and Water Authority is correct. In fact they sold all the remaining capacity! This means there is no capacity for growth in the Tyrone/Snyder township area. Not for additional jobs at the paper mill and n...

Re: Sewage Treatment Plant mandate

I hear the Municipalitie's pleas, but for me they fall on deaf ears. They have had more than 12 years notice and have in most cases done nothing to get ready for the mandate to comply with the Chesapeake Bay pollution reduction requirements. For water treatment facilities this really boils down redu...
