The 5th Annual Polar Bear Ride & Plunge
In Memory of Bennett Sterling
To benefit the Blue Butterfly Fund
January 1, 2008

The Rides:
The Long Course New this YEAR!
The first ride will depart from the First Lutheran Church, Mifflinburg, PA parking lot at 11:00am. We will take the back roads out towards Weikert and north of Mifflinburg before making the ascent to Halfway-Dam. There will be a lead and follow vehicle but no other support until you get to Halfway-Dam (so be prepared if you accept this challenge!). After the ascent and the plunge, you take the same route as the 2nd ride back to Mifflinburg. The ride will be ~50 miles. Check the website for a more accurate estimate.

The Traditional Course
The second ride departs the First Lutheran Church parking lot at 11:10am. We take back roads to Route 192 and head up the mountain to R.B. Winter State Park. The return route is the same (but colder). The roundtrip distance is 25 miles.

To Plunge or not to Plunge: Plunge! Why should you do this? To fully wake up to the New Year and remind yourself that you are alive!!! The choice is yours, but we highly recommend you take the Plunge on New Years Day! There will be an area to de-robe and to change back into warmer clothes, hot cider, and a lot of people to witness your bravery.

Registration: Registration opens at 9:30am in the basement of the First Lutheran Church in Mifflinburg, PA.

Challenge: Set your price. How much money would it take to get you to jump in the dam on January 1st? Challenge your family and friends to donate money to meet your goal and realize that your effort will help families whose children have cancer. Their donations are tax-deductible and sure to make you suffer for a good cause. Are you up for the challenge?

Donations: A minimum donation of $20 is required to participate in the benefit ride/plunge. If we receive your registration with $50 or more in pledged donations by December 24th, you will receive our very first Polar Bear Ride and Plunge event T-shirt FREE. These will be available on a very limited basis, so be sure to register by December 20th. This also entitles your sponsors to a tax-deduction for 2007!

Post Ride Party: Ahh…the best part of the Polar Bear Ride and Plunge is the Post Ride Party! Stay after the ride and join us for the post ride party in the basement of First Lutheran Church. Warm up with some hot soup, yummy treats, and camaraderie. We will have door prizes for participants and an award for the top fund-raiser.

Safety: There will be a lead vehicle and a follow vehicle warning traffic of our presence on the road. The group tends to get stretched out due to the climb up to the dam, and the roads are open to traffic. Each rider will be asked to sign a waiver and must assume responsibility for their own safety. This is not a race but it is a great opportunity to get together with others, have fun, and benefit a great cause. In the event of poor weather or road conditions the longer ride may be cancelled and/or the event will be postponed until Saturday, January 5th. Check the website on January 1st to confirm that we are a GO!
