Cabin in the Forest

'Twas just a tiny cabin
We lived in for a while,
And though I was a little lad,
It's memory makes me smile.

We climbed a ladder to the loft,
Where we would spend the night,
The three of us all bedded down,
And everything seemed right.

We opened up the window,
To hear the cricket's song,
And I would journey off to sleep
Before too very long.

Not much room to romp and play
In that small abode,
But just outside the shanty door,
A lizard or a toad.

Woods and trees and rocks and sand
Just made for having fun,
And I would play alone out there,
Until the setting sun.

Food was cooked on a homemade stove
Made of rocks and mortared fast.
It wasn't much to brag about,
But I wouldn't trade my past.

The simple things are large it seems,
In our memory,
Like a cabin in the forest,
And a family of three.
