Pale Eyes

Post by SoccerMom »

My brother passed away unexpectedly two months ago. He left behind some poems and shorts stories, some incomplete.

Pale Eyes
By David Auman

I stand on a hill
Of dead trees, their frail
hands too far from heaven.

Caterpillar nests,
like tattered clothing, hang
from the branches.
Leaves crush under
my feet as the cricket voices
of summer night grow faint.

Men in the town
below scavenge on
rats by the glow
of streetlights.

Biting into gray fur,
tails whipping their cheeks
claws scrapping their palms,
the men feast.

Even from this distance,
as they struggle,
I see dust settling at their feet.

And above me the moon,
a pale eye of god, observes.
Helping to light
the darkness that
hides our decay.
