This isn't the recipe my mom used to make, but it's from an old cookbook. Maybe this will help.

RAISIN FILLED COOKIES
2 c. brown sugar
1 c. oleo or shortening
3 eggs (well beaten)
1 tsp. vanilla
4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. soda
Mix and chill.
FILLING:
1 1/2 c. raisins
1 c. water
1 1/2 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
Thicken with 1 T. flour. (The recipe doesn't say this, but I think you're supposed to cook the raisin mixture a bit to soften the raisins and thicken the mixture with the flour, but I'm not sure.) Chill.
Roll out chilled dough and cut with round cutter. Put 1 tsp. filling on dough (Mom used to put a little bit more than that); cover with another piece of cut dough. Close around edge with finger tips.

Now this particular recipe doesn't have an oven temperature or baking time, but you might want to try about 350 degrees for about 10 minutes, or until they start to lightly brown.

This recipe is from the Meals of Brethren Women Cook Book, No. 2, and was submitted by Joyce Clapper.

Eureka! I found my copy of my mom's recipe. It has a softer dough and is especially good.

RAISIN FILLED COOKIES:
4 eggs
2 c. sugar
2 c. Crisco
1/2 c. sweet milk (not sour milk)
3 tsp. baking powder
salt
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. vanilla
enough flour to make a soft dough

Cream sugar and Crisco and eggs. Add flour alternately with milk. Add vanilla and baking powder and soda.

FILLING:
Stew 1 box raisins in some water. Sweeten--about 1 c. sugar. Add vanilla or lemon. Thicken with corn starch or flour.

Bake at about 375 degrees until lightly browned.

I can speak from experience that this recipe makes deee-licious cookies!
Enjoy!

My dad grew up in Altoona and married a girl from Tyrone, many, many years ago. I bet we're shirt-tailed relatives, at the very least!

Can we get a report back on the cookies? I am hungry but don't want the calories so I will rely on your reporting for my experience.

Luke,
I haven't made them yet, got busy painting the outside of my house, and didn't have time. I promise to get on it sometime next week and I'll let you know how they came out.
