When are the people of Tyrone going to get fed up?
if a hotel would really work in Tyrone, don't you think someone would have started one already. don't you think it would be in place soon before the new section of I99 is completed? i really don't think many "big" hotel chains think so. the whole area is better off with bed and breakfasts then a hotel chain. we don't have a lake (resevoir park doesn't count, neither does the one in front of armory when it rains a lot), a tourist attraction (big blue house where they sell crack isn't one...and railroad museum is NEVER open!) or any venues for concerts (gray/veterans field doesn't count......they won't let even the peewees play on it). i just think they would be better off putting a discount/ chain store in somewhere. it will bring jobs to area and a place for many to "run" to without having to travel to altoona or state college.
but thats just my idea.

How do you compare a chain store to a hotel. It's not an apples to appls comparison. I would think that Tyrone is attempting to attract as many businesses as possible.
I disagree that a hotel would not work in Tyrone. Like I said, a bed and breakfast is fine for those who like a B&B, but I have stayed in hotels in Altoona when I was in Tyrone.
It will come down to a feasibilty study which is much more scientific than either of our "thoughts." If that proves that Tyrone can suppot a hotel, then one will come, if not, it will not come about.
FYI - Disount store in Tyrone? Wasn't AMES a discount store?

thats what makes this country so great. everyone has an opinion and can express it in any manner possible.
ames was a department store but was mismanaged at the top. careless decisions (i.e. buying out hills dept stores) was the culprit of their downfall. i'm not saying the next department store will not be the same, but i know a lot of people that are tired of having to run to altoona or state college for things that the 2 "dollar stores" do not. i'm also not saying that a department store is our savior BUT a hotel will not be it! with the ever-increasing drug trafficking that is going on in our area, this will just be another venue for them to use to their advantage. like blain said about the "big blue building where they sell drugs", the dealers will look for any place to roost and sell their drugs. this is mine and many locals problem with the hotel. you say you have not been back in the area for awhile? just drive around some night, sit in a parking lot or just walk around town.....its being delivered right in broad daylight anymore. trust me terry when i say this, drugs has become a BIG problem in Tyrone.
the borough might be cleaning up the town. they might be attracting SOME new businesses into town. BUT what about the businesses that have been lost? what about the businesses that have moved outta town? we have too many businesses that are the same. no one wants to make new adventures (except for the doghouse). just look around when you come back home. you'll understand what i am trying to type. i'm NOT making you come to my side of things, just giving you a perspective from someone still living here. yea i know that some businesses are fly by night, edge of your seat, go with the economy types (i.e- card shops, comic shops, pool halls, game rooms), but we DO need a better variety in town. i just suggested a department store because THAT ames store was doing well, it was the WHOLE company that fell in disarray. i don't know about anyone else BUT to me, the "dollar stores" are cheap and easy ways to stopgap until i go and buy a "namebrand" out of town. with gas prices the way they are, my trips outta town have become less.
just like i said before, this is only my opinion. agree or disagree with it you must BUT its still MY opinion.......

Wow, many different opinion's! Great.
Many out of town visitors that I know stay at a hotel in Altoona if they are not able to stay in Tyrone at there actual destination. So, I think I am all for putting the hotel in Tyrone. I feel maybe the whole drug deal feelings may change if they know what chain or who will be running the hotel. Or did I miss it? Has any names been mentioned as to who will be "potentially" opening one up?
If a hotel does open, depending on who runs it, I think that may be a major factor in the feelings about drug dealing. What do you think? Even now, my feelings are that drugs would not be any more of a problem. Besides, the drug dealers in Tyrone do not "usually" even have enough money to pay for there debt as drug dealers to anyone but there own Dealer. Notice I did say "usually"
Dj- I do agree Tyrone also does need a small department store similar to Ames. Did it ever cross your mind that maybe if a hotel does come to our town maybe that would call for a small department store? I do agree with running to State or Tyrone to buy anything worth buying, as our trips are limited to only once a week.
I THINK A HOTEL WOULD BE GREAT FOR TYRONE IN MOST ASPECTS!

The place that my husband works always has to put their customers up in a hotel in either State or Altoona. Last winter they had guys here from down south that never drove in snow. The fist night they were here we got six inches of snow and they were in Altoona. Needless to say, one ended up in a ditch! I know that one business in Tyrone can't carry a Hotel, but how many others might need it too?

Burker King would use a hotel on occassions for inspectors, etc, Chicago Rivet, Chemical Plant, Paper Mill, general passing by off of I-99, Grier School, Funeral Homes, Holiday travellers, Grocery Stores (when they do the 3-day store inventroy from an outside source.)
Don't fool ourselves to think that a full-blown Marriott would be coming to Tyrone, but something like a Best Western, Red Roof Inn, Super 8, Motel 6, Cross Country Inn, MicroTel....all would be viable options.

now see, thats what i wanna hear.....IDEAS!
i'm really not for a hotel but if it brings business into town and not more drugs, thats GREAT! i'm just worried that it will. most drug busts are being centered around hotel rooms lately, just don't want to see that happening to something that would build this town up.
i can see it working if its done right and carefully. BUT i hope they take everything into consideration like parking and access for BIG RIGS! the proposed site right now (across from the old IGA) is not a viable site in my opinion.
just wishing something more and better for our community. lived here most of my life and probably will live the rest of my life here.........

thats true Blain, anywhere in Tyrone is within walking distance of BK, Main Moon and OIP. the problem that will present the glorious Mayor MacCheese Hampton Inn will be adequate parking especially for Big Rigs. They will find turning in downtown Tyrone such a challenge and fun when they have been on the road for 12 hours. thats the problem with borough and MacCheese that they might be over-looking. i'm hoping they are not!
plus whatever "big chain" they get attached to, hopefully they will train the staff to look for the sneaky underhanded "pushers" that will probably frequent their establishment.
well i'm off to copyright the name for the hotel before the glorious MacCheese and borough council think of it. gotta make some money somehow to pay for gas.......
