This board has been too inactive lately.

To attempt to stir up some ACTIVITY - how about each person contribute:

- ONE thing you LIKE about Tyrone.

- ONE thing you DISLIKE about Tyrone.

My first 2 contributions:

LIKE - Sense of community.

DISLIKE - very limited job opportunities.

Please post yours; discuss as applicable...

Like: It's only about a 30 to 40 minute drive to State College

Dislike: It's about a 2 hour drive to Pittsburgh

Like: Peaceful and quiet

Dislike: Stores closed on Mondays. No place to get groceries during non-business hours.

Like: Thanks to the new highway which takes the bulk of the traffic by us, instead of thru us, I enjoy the peacefulness of the area. This town was on it's way out many years ago. It was becoming a down right dirty 'ole town with businesses closing down and people moving away. Thank goodness someone grabbed it in time.... there is still a lot to be desired, but, aside from old buildings in need of demolition, the town is clean and being properly taken care of. The downtown streetscape has been a huge improvement and has brought our town back up with hopes for a future. Also, knowledge of the fact that we have a pristine watershed, the fact that eagles are returning to this area, that fact that this area is well known and documented to be part of the "Blair County Natural Heritage Area." This area is well known, and documented, to be an important bird area ( IBA ) by the state and federal government.... one only needs to look around and see many species of beautiful birds residing here in this area. The landscape and scenic beauty of the mountains that surround us.... their colors changing with each season. This is our hometown.
Dislike: Most of the above being taken for granted.... allowing a few to determine the demise of a beautiful, beautiful, peaceful area by allowing the canopy to be cut away for placement of wind turbines and turning much of the landscape into a concrete jungle.

Like: I-99

Dislike: No place to shop which means a trip to Altoona. The unique characters that populate Pennsylvania Avenue which makes the town look uninviting . Like to see a nice casual restaurant that served good food at a good price and where you can have a beer.

Like: Memories of a town that used to exist......a town that was alive.....and a people that sat on their porches, socialized, and had each other's back.

Dislike: Change ...Tyrone is not the same town it used to be. The heart of the town is broken.

Has anyone noticed that we all have great memories such as those posted in Remember when...and other threads, but only a few have shared new or recent happenings...and most of those have been negative in content....kinda sad.

Well, your parents said the same thing about the Tyrone you grew up in. It's probably part of our aging process.

Banksy...you're probably right, in fact I know you are right about the parent comment. My mother used to say things like: "Look at those boys with hair hanging to their shoulders"....and, "Those girls in halter tops might as well just come out in their bra(ssieres), we'da been skinned alive if we came outdoors like that!!" I dunno.......today when I sit down town on Pennsy...the thing that bothers me isn't what they look like....or what they are or aren't wearing.....but that soooo many of them are pushing babies. Often I see girls in hoodies and jeans....while their babies are sporting onesies. I honestly have to hold myself back .... I so want to ask them,,, if you're cold ....doncha think your infant might be as well? ( And maybe that's the difference...my mom wouldn't have held back...she'd be screaming....."get some clothes on that child!" )

As far as it being the aging process.....again.....you're probably right......what I once thought was "old and judgemental" I now view as being "mature and wise."

With that being said....I still feel like the heart of the town is broken. People just don't get involved like they used to...for the most part... I don't think Tyrone has a communal feel anymore.....but then again....I think most of America has become desensitized.

Like: Very good school district here, teachers really seem to care about the students and my kids are receiving an excellent education.

Dislike: Having to drive to Altoona/State College for so many things, including shopping, movies and other activities.
