New Grocery Store For Tyrone

Post by Robbuck »

Copied from the Altoona Mirror:

TYRONE - If plans fall into place, Tyrone residents soon will have a new downtown grocery store.

William McCartney and his wife, Rosalie, have reached an agreement with Tops Friendly Markets to purchase the former BiLo Foods store at 13th Street and Washington Avenue.

"We settled on a price, and about two and half weeks ago they accepted my bid for the store," said McCartney, former owner of the Tyrone IGA. "We are waiting for the sales agreement, then we can move forward."

The BiLo store closed in April after Williamsville, N.Y.-based Tops purchased the building as part of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court-approved acquisition of a majority of The Penn Traffic Co.'s assets, including 79 supermarkets in a four-state area. Penn Traffic had filed for bankruptcy late last year.

McCartney, who has been in the grocery business since 1971 when he worked at the Bellwood IGA, said he had been talking to Penn Traffic officials before the company filed for bankruptcy. He then began discussions with Tops.

McCartney said he is working with Altoona-Blair County Development Corp. and is in the process of lining up financing for the purchase and renovation project.

"We will repave the parking lot, install new lighting and do some cleaning, painting and some revamping. It will take at least a month to get it ready once we get in," McCartney said. "If everything falls into place, we hope to open in September, but it could be October."

Mayor Bill Fink said he was pleased the former BiLo building will again become a full-scale grocery store.

"I think it is fantastic. There will be a lot of people who are really thrilled, especially the senior group here in town," Fink said. "It will be a major plus. I want to welcome the McCartneys back to town."

The new store will be named Country Market, McCartney said.

"Everything that they had there before will be there again," McCartney said. "The prices will be a little more economical for the consumer."

He said he hopes to hire 10 full-time and 20 part-time employees. He'll begin accepting applications at the store around mid-August. He said he wants to hire local people.

McCartney said he is pleased to open the grocery store.

"I really enjoy working with the people in Tyrone. It is frustrating for them not to have a grocery store and we saw this as a great opportunity. It has been a real inconvenience for them. This will be a lot better than it was before," McCartney said.

Fink praised those who stepped up after the BiLo store closed in April.

"The community came together. Save-A-Lot extended their hours, the senior center made vans available for people and Mac's Market chipped in to help people so they wouldn't have a problem getting food," Fink said.

I can't understand why Tyrone needs ANOTHER grocery store.

You've already got:

1. The A&P at the far south end of PA Avenue (at the "tip" of the "hardman").

2. Ray's Riverside over there beside the railroad tracks.

3. The Foodland out there behind Butch Harlow's gas station.

AND...

4. The Quaker store out along 220 between the Long's Dairy (in front of WTRN) and the bowling alley.

Well - I wouldn't buy groceries anyway if I returned home for a visit.

I'd eat out every meal.

Pizza from Mario's and the Hub.

Burgers, fries, and a shake from the Lion's Inn.

Steak sandwich and a bucket from Country School Chicken.

A hoagie from East End - for LUNCH ON A MONDAY.

One of Hap's great hoagies, 2:30AM, at the Paper Mill Diner.

And to top it all off, a chocolate drop cookie from Kienzel's Bakery. Gotta have that...

An ice cream sandwich from Fegley's on a hot summer day wasn't bad either.

Where's the "way back" in time machine. Just a short visit would do.

LOL!

I think I know where Sylvia is.....

you see, she and some guy (who shall remain nameless to protect the other guilties) were up in the woods checking on the turbines around Halloween night. She got too close to one of the durn things and one of the spinning blades got hooked onto her bra strap, slinging her due North! Last time anyone saw her she was flying over the NY state line heading towards Canada.

At least that's what Google Earth said......

So that's what we heard.... way off in the far distance we kept hearing weeeeeeeeeeee, weeeeeeeeeeee, weeeeeeeeeee.... Ahhhhh, poor Sylvia.... after all these years, she had to go and get herself all hung up in "progress." Talk about over the river and thru the woods....wow, whata' way to go !!! Snap, crackle, and pop !!!
I bet she found a local grocery store when she landed. One selling turkeys, stuffing, corn, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravey, homemade bread, eggnog, pumpkin pies, ice cream, coffee, tea.... all the good stuff that one buys at their local hometown grocery store. Never really paid that much attention, but, doesn't every town have a grocery store/hometown market.... like Weis or Giant or Martins or Weigmans or Krogers, Riverside, BiLo.... you know, those kinda' grocery stores ?? I'm hungry. Happy Thanksgiving to all and to all. P.S. Hang in there Sylvia  .

I didn't forget it - I just purge it from my memory.

You see, when I was a little kid, I was such a hellion that I was banned from many Tyrone businesses.

Well, with Acme starting with an "A" - it was just always at the top of the list (even above the A&P, which my Dad managed)...
