Well, well. The thread seems to have wandered off. See if you remember this:

I'm sleeping
And right in the middle of a good dream
Then all at once I wake up
From something that keeps knocking at my brain
Before I go insane
I hold my pillow to my head
And spring up in my bed
Screaming out the words I dread
:fogey:

Don't cheat and Google this.... what's the fun in that?

Now we'd go out to meet him,
With a lantern light,
'Cause the roads got crooked,
On Saturday night,
And he'd come on down the hill,
And he'd stop in the yard.

oh Heck...I'll tell ya my song...... 90 mile an hour down a dead end street, Hank Snow

Please share your Big Gene story...... I listened to him FAITHFULLY

yanno,,,if my memory serves me right... I believe I won a record one night in some contest he was having...the song... I had never heard before but I played it til I wore it out.

It was...

When time was young we walked the road together
When love was sweet I meant the world to you
Now comes the sun we'll say goodbye forever
And teardrops will kiss the morning dew

and it may have been done by someone local.....I remember the record label saying something about it being promotional.....lol. I think Allison Krauss has done it recently though.

Dang.. I thought that was a Bob Dylan song.. Well, anyway. Big gene was a creature of habit. If you recall he always did album time at 3am. He would put on an album and just let it play the whole way through. That was his time to go have a smoke and do his business and eat lunch or whatever else he might have to do. That was the reason so many times we used to have to listen to the record skip. It would be half way through a song and it would get stuck. So you'd get and I get- and I get - and I get- and I get. And so on. Gene was usually going potty with the monitor turned down and didn't hear it skipping until someone called. Sometimes he'd have a nap in there and not come out until someone called.
So here's to Big Gene, wherever he may be. :drink: Here's an old country novelty song to try and stump you. :fogey:
Good Luck

It was not so long ago
That I went tripping through the snow
Out to that house behind my old hound dog
Where I'd sit me down to rest
Like a snow bird on his nest
And read the Sears and Roebuck catalog

Hey Robbuck....I remember those skipping records! I posted in the Legends thread about that very thing...lol. I didn't know your song, or don't think I do. Gonna have to go find it and listen. Here's an easy one for yunz.

He always wore his sunday feathers and held a tomahawk
The maiden wore her beads and braids and hoped someday he'd talk
( He was ), too stubborn to ever show a sign
Because his heart was made of knotty pine.
