Re: Meters
Typical. It costs 25 cents to park for 30 minutes in State College. Personally, I'd rather use the municipal parking lot (beside the old Y) and walk than pay.

Re: Meters
Do you get a complementary "SUCKER!" sticker every time you feed a quarter into the meter?
At least in SC there are good reasons to pop a quarter into the meter.

I'm not sure SoccerMom, I threw last evenings paper away... however, I think I read those meters will cost a quarter too.SoccerMom wrote:Typical. It costs 25 cents to park for 30 minutes in State College. Personally, I'd rather use the municipal parking lot (beside the old Y) and walk than pay.

Re: Meters
yes, they did say one could rent a space in the parking lot for the spaces that don't have meters.
I think it will be cheaper to just pay the $5.00 a day ticket.

Re: Meters
I think what soccermom is talking about is the small lot on the side of the old Y, which is a borough lot. I thought the sign says for borough business only, meaning the borough office, though I could be wrong. The meters in front of the Y may disappear, along with the ones down 12th street near the police station and high rise.

Re: Meters
Parking in the lot by the Y is free after 5 p.m., that's what I meant. I'm usually not downtown until after then. Are the other places free as well? Anyway, nothing shocks me anymore. I get to pay $35 a month to park at Penn State, just so I can get to work.

Re: Meters
Copied from original article:
Currently, metered parking within the borough is enforced Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
So, anywhere there is a meter is free after 5 pm!

Re: Meters
Thanks Sissy, that's good to know.
I know they are trying to revitalize the downtown, so I'm wondering if increasing the parking costs will deter people from coming to shop, dine, etc.

Re: Meters
That's minuscule compared to the benefits of a full-time employee at Penn State, and a bargain for a monthly parking permit in many areas.SoccerMom wrote:$35 a month to park at Penn State, just so I can get to work.

I would venture to guess that if a quarter deters you from an hour of shopping downtown, you most likely were not going to go anyway.SoccerMom wrote:I'm wondering if increasing the parking costs will deter people from coming to shop, dine, etc.

Re: Meters
The benefits at Penn State are good, the pay is not. I could be making more elsewhere, but choose to stay due to having a flexible schedule, ability to work from home, etc. Before the parking garage went up (and the parking pass shot up to $35) I used to walk a mile each way from the commuter lot to my office. So, as with everything else, you pick your poison.

Re: Meters
My wife has been trying like heck to even get an interview at PSU, and you'd think that with her having a M.S. and finishing up her MBA in 2 months she'd have no problem at that. Throw in that we are season ticket holders, I expect better from PSU!!
Who do you have to know to get into that place?

Re: Meters
Bucktail, I will tell you it is all about who you know. You'll have a tough time getting in unless you know someone in the department you are applying. I only got in because of a friend (still surprised they hired me with my Pitt degree and all!). Also, many times they already have someone in mind. For example, in our department our administrative assistant was retiring and one of the staff assistants had been groomed for years to take over that position. But, by as instituted by their hiring process, they had to interview a certain number of people, even opening the position to those outside the university, before they could hire her. A complete waste of time for all involved, IMO.
