Big plays keep Eagles unbeaten

By Bob Larson, For the Mirror

TYRONE — When Tyrone’s defensive line stopped Bishop Guilfoyle on fourth down and inches at midfield, it was a sign of things to come for the Marauders, none of which were good.

Tyrone took over on downs and went 50 yards on six plays, culminating on a 16-yard touchdown run by Johnny Franco, and the rout was on.

Tyrone outscored BG, 35-0, in the first half, before settling for a 42-0 win Friday in a Mountain Athletic Conference Nittany Division game at Gray-Veterans Memorial Field.

Tyrone improved to 7-0, while the Marauders slipped to 2-5.

“We were controlling the ball and made a couple of first downs,” Bishop Guilfoyle coach Marty Georgiana said. “We wanted to try and keep the ball out of their hands. We went for it on fourth and inches, and we didn’t get it. They made a big stop.”

BG’s troubles continued when it fumbled the ball away three times in the first half.

Tyrone missed a 36-yard field goal after the first turnover, but Tyler Gillmen scooped up the second fumble and went 18 yards for a touchdown to extend the Golden Eagles’ lead to 14-0.

Tyrone ended the half with scores of 61, 64 and 97 yards.

“We are capable of breaking one for a big play,” Tyrone coach John Franco said. “We have been doing that all season. We are capable of driving the ball, but when a big play happens, we’re not going to call it back.”

First, Justin Schopp caught an over-the-shoulder pass from Tyler Golden for a 61-yard touchdown pass.

Gillmen then broke a run to the outside and went 64 yards down the Tyrone sideline to extend the Golden Eagles’ lead to 28-0.

Not to be outdone, Franco, on a third-and-28 from the Tyrone 3-yard line, broke free and raced 97 yards down the BG sideline for a touchdown.

“It was just one of those nights,” Georgiana said. “Things went wrong for us, and they went right for Tyrone. They have been going right for Tyrone for a long time, and that’s no accident. They have a very good team.”

With the mercy rule in effect to start the second half, Tyrone opened with a 51-yard drive after BG failed to recover an onside kick. Gillmen scored from 9 yards out on the 10th play of the drive to set the final score.

“I’m glad this series is over,” said Franco, who graduated from and coached at BG. “It’s not a rivalry. I have a lot of respect for Marty (Georgiana) and his team. Marty is the first offensive player I ever coached. He played hard all the way until the end, and his team plays the same way. He works his tail off, and as a result BG will have good results in the near future.”

Eagles fight off Warriors’ test

By Bob Larson, For the Mirror

TYRONE — Seven games into the season and the Tyrone Golden Eagles have not been tested.

That was until Friday night.

Indian Valley trailed Tyrone, 14-6, heading into the fourth quarter and had its chances to tie the game.

Tyrone’s defense came up big on more than one occasion in the second half, and the Golden Eagles kept their perfect record intact with a 28-6 win over the Warriors in a Mountain Athletic Conference non-division game in front of a Homecoming crowd at Gray-Veterans Memorial Field.

“Indian Valley put us in a position where we had to respond, and we did,” Tyrone coach John Franco said. “We were challenged for the first time, and it brought our kids back down to earth.”

With Tyrone leading 14-6, Indian Valley started the second half with good field position after Brent Hartman returned a kick to the Tyrone 42-yard line.

The Warriors drove the ball deeper into Tyrone territory before Shane Emigh picked off a pass at the 9-yard line, killing Indian Valley’s drive.

On the Warriors’ second possession, Nam Shartzer broke into the open field for a 52-yard gain before being brought down from behind on a touchdown-saving tackle by Emigh.

“That was the turning point of the game,” Franco said. “We have watched Shartzer on film and saw him break runs like that before. Only nobody was able to catch him. I was impressed Shane did.”

Facing a fourth-and-2 from the Tyrone 14-yard line, Indian Valley fumbled the ball over to Tyrone, ending another opportunity to score.

“Tyrone is a very sound team,” Indian Valley coach Gawen Stoker said. “They wait for mistakes and then take advantage of things. Then they began to dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. That Tyler Hoover is a handful. We had to double-team him, and that opened things up for them on offense.”

Hoover, Tyrone’s 6-foot-4, 320-pounder, anchored the line and starting opening holes for the two-headed monster of Tyler Gillmen and Johnny Franco.

Gillmen finished with 139 yards rushing on 19 carries and a touchdown, while Franco carried it 20 times for 133 yards and three touchdowns.

After the fumble recovery, Tyrone went 91 yards on 11 plays, culminating on a 1-yard touchdown run by Franco, and the Golden Eagles extended their lead to 21-6.

Gillmen then scored from 2 yards out on Tyrone’s next possession to put the game on ice.

“We were able to put together some long sustained drives tonight,” Franco said. “That’s good because we haven’t had to do that as much lately. We have been scoring on the big play, but tonight we were able to grind it out and show we can score that way too.”

Franco broke loose for a 28-yard run, setting up his own touchdown run from a yard out to put Tyrone on top, 7-0.

Indian Valley pulled to within 7-6 when Shartzer scored from 2 yards out after a 28-yard run.

Franco scored on a 7-yard touchdown run, and Tyrone led 14-6 at the half.

“Tyrone has two good runners and a great line,” Stoker said. “What more do you need?”

Eagles overcome deficit, stay unbeaten

By Brian Carson, For the Mirror

SPRING MILLS — It was a situation that the Tyrone football team hadn’t been in all season — playing from behind.

The fifth-ranked Class AA team in the state found itself down 14-7 in the second quarter to a motivated Penns Valley squad fighting for its playoff life.

By the time the first half ended, the Golden Eagles did what good teams are supposed to do, fight through the adversity. Tyrone came away with two second-quarter scores and held on for a 21-14 Mountain Athletic Conference Nittany Division win.

The Golden Eagles improved to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play, while the Rams fell to 5-4 overall and 1-4 in the MAC.

“This was a very tough game, and we knew it was going to be a tough game,’’ said Tyrone coach John Franco. “Our fans think we should beat every team we play by 40 points, and that’s just not going to happen.

“Everything went against us in this game, and to be honest, we probably shouldn’t have won. But we found ways to make plays to win the game, and that’s what good teams do. This game proved that we still have a ton of work to do.’’

Tyrone tied things up at 14 when Johnny Franco, who finished with 160 yards, took a sweep around the left side and dashed 46 yards to paydirt with 7:57 left until half.

The Rams muffed a punt on their next series, and the Golden Eagles took over in great field position at the Penns Valley 28. Franco busted in from 2 yards out eight plays later, and Tyrone grabbed the lead for good with just 1:51 left in the half. The key play of the drive was a 13-yard pass from Tyler Golden to Shayne Tate.

“That was the first time we’ve been behind all year, and here we are in Week 9,’’ said Franco “I thought the kids responded to the adversity well, but we’re going to have to work as hard as we can to do well in the playoffs.

“We clinched the No. 1 seed last week, and I was concerned about a letdown from our guys, because that happens to a lot of teams after they clinch. I tip my hat to Penns Valley, though. They played hard and did a great job tonight.’’

Tyrone opened up the scoring on this wet, cold and muddy night of football with an eight-play, 63-yard drive that was capped by a Tyler Gillmen 6-yard touchdown run. A 19-yard strike from Golden to Justin Schopp on a third-and-9 kept the drive alive. Gillmen ended with 133 yards on 16 carries.

The Rams, who needed a victory to make it into the playoffs, answered the Tyrone punch with some blows of their own with two scores early in the second quarter.

Chris Korn, Penns Valley’s 1,000-yard back, ran three times for 24 yards on a eight-play, 65-yard march that ended with Korn scoring from 12 yards out on a pass from Matt Johnson. Korn finished the game with 75 yards on 20 carries.

On the ensuing Tyrone drive, Von Voigt came barreling in on a safety blitz and stripped the ball out of Golden’s hands and fell on it in the end zone for a touchdown.

“Our kids played very hard, and I’m very proud of them,’’ said Penns Valley coach Marty Tobias. “This was a fun game to coach, and I’m sure a fun game to watch when you have two teams like that playing each other.

“The weather can be a great equalizer, and we knew it was going to be a hard-fought tough game,’’ said Franco.

Tyrone closes out the regular season at home against Johnstown, while Penns Valley travels to Lewistown on Friday.
