Tyrone DOES NOT NEED ANOTHER DRUG INFESTED PROJECTS!!!! I am not saying you are on drugs but cmon, ALOT of people are, that live in the complex. There are 3 to choose from, pick a few and get on the waiting list. you'll get in eventually. In my opinion I say tear it down and rebuild another YMCA something for the youth. and for the adults. yrs and yrs ago we had vollyball ,basketball, gymnastics, weight lifting and much more happening there. Not to mention the awesome Y dances. We need something that will help keep the kids off the streets and also make money for the town. and Hopefully by keeping them off the streets it will keep them from landing themselves into section 8 houseing. .........MY OPINION ONLY

I think you need to get a grip.

First of all, the size of my family is my business.

Second of all my house is not drug infested - unless you count childrens tylenol.

Third, do we really need another gymnasium?

Edited, by Rick, for content

By the way - those Y dances were always lame.

I'll try to make a long story short Banksy... By selfish, I mean an individual, or a hotel chain, coming in here and running the show their way. If a hotel is to be... borrow the monies from a bank and not from an individual. Hire a top-of-the-line, educated, hotel management team to come in here and work hand-in-hand with those individuals from Tyrone who will be involved... both parties, in agreement with establishing the services required to develop and operate a hotel successfully... and be able to continue with it's operation for years to come. Let this management team do all the work including the advertising and finances.
I feel the hotel should be unique and personal to our hometown and not part of some big "chain."
If they are gonna' do it... do it !! Make it good !! You get what you pay for and I honestly think a hotel (if it is top notch) in Tyrone will make it.
Recognize and give credit where credit is due... especially, to those individuals whose idea it was in the first place to even have a hotel in Tyrone once again... and to the individuals who worked hard to see that the mission was accomplished.

Perhaps you both could get a grip?
nancykins wrote: First of all, the size of my family is my business.
Family is not a business by definition.... although it is a tough thing to deal with day in and day out.
nancykins wrote: Second of all my house is not drug infested - unless you count childrens tylenol.
You should try Children's Motrin at night, it last a little longer.
nancykins wrote: Third, do we really need another gymnasium?
Is there any gyms available to the public? The one's at the schools are usually taken for school activities. Also, the "Y" doesn't have to be just about a gym. My days at the "Y" were spent playing the d*mn KISS pinball machine, playing pool and ping-pong, and watching MLB baseball on TV. Oh, yeah, and using the upstairs with some of the girls to make-out when the kids wrestling wasn't in there.
nancykins wrote: If dolphinocn wants to exercise has she ever heard of jogging?
Jogging is not good for the joints. Speaking if joints.... haha
nancykins wrote: Take a walk, do some pushups, eat a piece of fruit.
Do you suggest these be done at the same time, or in succession one after the other? Also, fruit isn't that healthy if you expect to lose weight. It's loaded with sugar and carbohydrates. Do some research on the Glycemic Index, it will tell you all you need to know.
nancykins wrote: Maybe if Tyrone wasn't so obsessed with hoagies 90% of the town wouldn't be overweight.
I gotta hand it to ya, the did me in.
nancykins wrote: So keep flappin your lips chubby - it's probably the only exercise you ever get.
Medically, we get exercise just from sitting, but probably not so much.
nancykins wrote: By the way - those Y dances were always lame.
The dance themselves were lame, but they were a good excuse to get out.

I agree with most of what you say with the exception of a chain. I can only speak from my experiences, but if I have the choice of a Hampton Inn in Altoona verus a Taylor Motel in Tyrone, I'll stay in Altoona and drive the 15 minutes to Tyrone.

With a good chain you get economies of scale and a managment staff. Mom and pop hotel/motels are a thing of the past unless you have a bed and breakfast niche market.

What do you have against a big chain? Do you do all of your shopping at unique and hometown places? Do you avoid Wal-Mart, Target, old Navy, etc or is it just the hotel idea you feel should be unique?

For the record, I never personally attacked you, or your situation. I am proud to be a homeowner, so if you want me to apologize for obtaining an education, working in the same industry for 15 years and striving to make a good life for my son with my husband, you will be waiting a long time.

I agree with everything Harlow said. He must have read my mind. Edited, by Rick, for content 8)

This is nice, real smart.....First you start off with wanting a place for kid's...Then the problem get's solved and you find out good new's for the kid's...Then you trash the guy for doing it,to which he could just tear it down and walk away...Then in the mean time you bash family's in lower income housing...Then you bring this hoagie stuff into it which start's a family store bashing.Yup,this work's for progress. That's just the type of meeting's of the mind's I wouldn't want runing my program,I'd lose it in a week. One thing to sovling problem's is to say it as an idea and not to cram it down someone's throat and degrade them.Teaching is a key,try turning it to unlock some door's in life. :stick:

THE TYRONE YMCA?

First of all Nancy!!!! reread my post. I did not say YOUR house was drug infested!!!!

Edited, by Rick, for content - please keep it civil, and be sure to read the rules thank you.

And Yes I think Tyrone does need a gym, and like I said in my last post there is alot more to the "Y" than just lifting weights. And the lame dances so you say, was something that every kid (back in the day) looked forward to. again it was something recreational for them too do. maybe that would be a good way for those "chubby's" (as you say) to drop some weight. danceing is a great exercise. ........way to go G&R on fixing up the "Y"........again my opinions

I agree to dancing.I hate the big E word, but, dancing,I miss that.I love rocking to the oldies. :bluebounce:I will state this fact....Low income housing was to be for example, wife's who lost their husband's to death or injury and couldn't make it because the full time job they had was gone,it was for emergency only untill you got on your feet,it was for the older people when a nursing home wasn't want they needed and I do agree, not to all the people, but few,it's become baby land in some.If you need it,use it,but don't abuse it.That is all some are trying to say. :thumb:

Banksy, yet another discussion about hoagies?

Even I've moved beyond this topic.

I don't think you'll be earning a gold star for this one.

Please try and restrain yourself and stay on topic.

-----------------------

For my part, I'd have to say I agree with 150Bucktail and Blain.

A hotel would have difficulty sustaining itself in Tyrone unless there's a compelling reason to stay here - Penn State related events are not enough.

The only way that'll we'll be able to bring in visitors is by actively marketing some of the things that make this town/area unique.

Off the top of my head, I think that the Borough and Chamber of Commerce should begin to actively market our proximity to the Little Juniata River. There are people paying Donny Beaver $1000 a day to fish on the Little J. If you could entice these people to not only visit but take lodging in the Borough, I think you'd see a real influx of cash. They like Banksy obviously have money to burn.

The Little Juniata River is a huge asset not a liability.
It needs to be actively promoted and protected.

I see your point, and know what you are saying Banksy. I too would choose the Hampton as opposed to MaPop/Taylor stuff. My thoughts are, and I could very well be wrong.... my thoughts are... if you have a "chain" come in here, or an "individual," with his/her money... the hotel would be theirs and not Tyrone's. They would have their thumb on us and with any contention they could pull out and leave us hanging. Whereas, if a top-notch, management team, educated and trained in hotel management.. employees, educated and trained in hotel operations... and assuring it is a state-of the-art, 6-star (or whatever the top star is)... with advertising and a little patience... it could work.
Hey, I know.... if they have to get a "chain" in here.... call Donald !! Let's get a Hotel and Casino going... that should get some attention. We'll get BeachBiker back here to be the doorman :bluebounce:

It would be a shame to see this beautiful building torn down. It would be akin to loss of the Wilson Theater, the Villa or the Pennsylvania house. Without massive framework overhaul I can think of only one business venture that would be perfect for this structure. An all night bottle club would flourish at this "hub" of Tyrone.
A couple of swings with a sledgehammer and it would be ready for business. With the recent Moose shutdown the establishment would soon be bustling with business. A shrewd proprietor would add fiery neon's in every window as a beacon to the dawn of the dead cast that now own our streets. The introduction of a forty foot plus brass pole would put Tyrone back on the map.
The rooms upstairs could be rented by those who perhaps imbibed too much. Thus keeping our streets safe. You could even rent out rooms by the hour so that the weary could lay and rest.
The YMCA can be saved. Envision the next entertainment frontier. Build it and they will come.

I still don't follow you. How does a mom and pop versus a chain equate to it being "Tyrone's." If it's a mom and pop it isn't going to show up in American Express Travel, Expedia, and multiple SABRE listings for lodging. It will just be word of mouth, etc.

Grier School would assist in supporting the hotel, it isn't just Penn State as many of you suggest. Many people travelling in the area could likely utilize a hotel. I just don't see a mom and pop making it. It would be nice to see a chain come in and make space for Burley's as their in-hotel restaurant. I've never been in Burley's, but from the outside it doesn't have much appeal IMHO.

Your idea has great merit!

By tapping into an already existing customer base this venture would be assured success.

I recall that someone in an earlier post mentioned gambling - I assume they meant Bingo and scratchoffs.

This, in conjunction with your idea's would make for a powerful business plan.

My head is swimming with the possibilities.

Tyrone could be the Las Vegas of the Alleghenies! - Known to all far and wide as "The Hub of the Highways".
